No commentsPoor visual fixation in children and its possible role in attention deficit disorder (ADD)
Conclusion: It is suggested that a retained primitive visual reflex may contribute to aspects of inattention in children which, as a consequence, may be wrongly considered as a behavioural issue and may also impact upon the child’s ability to learn.Design: A prospective epidemiological study. No commentsTwo different mechanisms for omission and substitution errors in neglect dyslexia.
Authors: Martelli M, Arduino LS, Daini R
Neglect dyslexia is a reading disorder often associated with right-sided brain lesions. In reading single words, errors are mostly substitutions or omissions of letters that occupy the left-sided positions. Typically, these errors have been thought to depend on a single mechanism. Conversely, we propose that they are due to different mechanisms. In particular, a visuo-spatial mechanism is responsible for omissions and a perceptual integration process for substitution errors. We measured the performance of six patients with both neglect and neglect dyslexia, analyzing their reading errors as a function of letter spacing. According to our conjecture, letter spacing should increase omissions by moving part of the string further in the unattended sp…div id=medwormpbiMedWorm Message:/i/b Register for ba href=http://www.medmatcha.com target =_selfMedMatcha, MedWorm’s medical advertising network/a/b, and receive $5 free advertising./p/div

No commentsThe role of age of acquisition in picture and word naming in dyslexic adults.
Authors: Raman I
To date, there has been numerous reports that early acquired pictures and words are named faster than late acquired pictures and words in normal reading but it is not established whether age of acquisition (AoA) has the same impact on adult dyslexic naming, especially in a transparent orthography such as Turkish. Independent ratings were obtained for AoA, frequency, name agreement, and object familiarity in Turkish for all items in the Snodgrass and Vanderwart line drawing set. Dyslexic (N=15) and non-dyslexic (N=15) university undergraduates were asked to name 30 early acquired and 30 late acquired pictures and picture names standardized and selected from these norms. As predicted, there were main effects for (a) AoA with reaction times (RTs) for Early items named fas…

No commentsDevelopmental dyslexia: clinical aspects [Articles]
Developmental dyslexia (reading disability) is a specific impairment in learning to read that affects 3ndash;6% of school children in English-speaking countries. It is overrepresented in clinical populations referred to child and adolescent mental health services because of its high comorbidity with conduct disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and other developmental disorders. Clinicians may fail to identify it unless they maintain a high degree of awareness and make specific inquiries. A three-stage approach (routine screening, in-depth examination and referral for further testing) is described. The features of dyslexia and the clues to its diagnosis are discussed. A number of simple tests for identifying it are available and familiarity with these should improve diagnosti…div id=medwormpbiMedWorm Message:/i/b Register for ba href=http://www.medmatcha.com target =_selfMedMatcha, MedWorm’s medical advertising network/a/b, and receive $5 free advertising./p/div
